Coronavirus: Budapest Mayor Calls for ‘Braver’ Measures

Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony has called for “braver measures” to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.

Restrictive measures implemented so far to contain the epidemic have been “insufficient”, Gergely Karácsony said in a video message on Facebook on Monday.

“What we see if we look at Austria, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and other countries is that they have taken much braver measures,” the mayor said.

“That is why I have asked the central government to allow local councils to restrict the opening hours of shops except those providing for basic needs,” he said.

The operative board set up by Budapest to coordinate the city’s response to the coronavirus outbreak reviews the situation and makes decisions on a daily basis to keep the city going, he said.

Karácsony asked people to stay at home if possible, as well as to care for the elderly.
