HIV on the Rise in Hungary

Number of people with HIV+ rising in Hungary

Every year the number of people infected by the HIV virus has been rising in Hungary, the daily Magyar Nemzet said, quoting an infectologist.
Around 300 new cases are registered  each year, János Szlávik, chief
consultant at St István and St László  hospitals, said, adding that currently  1,700  people have to be screened regularly for HIV. It is assumed that there are “very many” undiscovered cases, he said. It is estimated that 4,000
people carry the virus in Hungary and that half are unaware of their state, he
added.

Each year there are around 40- 50 cases that have advanced to AIDS,
Szlávik said.
Based on Central Statistical Office (KSH) data, by 2014 there were 2,845
HIV infected registered in the country. Szlávik said the number was unreliable
since it contained deceased and migrants diagnosed with the virus in Hungary in the data.
