The Hungarian government has published a whole-page advertisement in today’s edition of the conservative Daily Mail in an attempt to convince the British electorate to vote for the United Kingdom to remain in the European Union on Thursday.
“The decision is yours, but I would like you to know that Hungary is proud to stand with you as a member of the European Union”, the message, which features the Hungarian flag and coat of arms and the signature of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, reads.
Speaking to the Hungarian state news agency MTI on Sunday, government spokesman Zoltán Kovács emphasised that Hungary considers the UK’s membership important because a strong Europe is possible with the co-operation of large member states. Despite the Hungarian government often being accused of anti-Europeanism, its current “pro-European attitude” well reflects that it is a committeed and solid believer in the community’s accomplishments even if it often has a different vision of the continent’s future, the government spokesman said.
Mr. Kovács also explained that the advertisement was originally planned to be published on Saturday but was eventually delayed due to the weekend campaign silence called after the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox on Thursday.
The referendum on EU membership is to be held in the United Kingdom on Thursday, with polls predicting a close result.
