Presidents of the German, Italian, French and Luxembourg parliaments published an open letter on Sunday urging EU authorities to take action and create a federal European Union.
They called on EU member states to support the idea of the United States of Europe.
It is time for a closer political integration and the creation of a federal state with broader powers. We know that such an initiative will encounter strong opposition, but the inactivity of some countries can’t paralyze the initiative. Those who believe in the European ideals must have the courage to take action right now and breathe a new life into the organization, rather than watch the downfall of the European project they write.
The open letter has been published by Italian newspaper La Stampa; the letter has been signed by President of Bundestag Norbert Lammert, President of the French National Assembly Claude Bartolone, President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Laura Boldrini, and Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies Presidents Mars di Bartolomeo.
The leading European politicians use Brexit as an excuse to highlight their ideas: “fast action” is needed and the federalization of Europe has to be sped up before other countries announce their intention to quit the organization, which would trigger the collapse of the European Union.
