‘World’s Best Public Building’ House of Hungarian Music to be Opened Next Year

The House of Hungarian Music, built as part of the Liget Budapest Project in City Park is scheduled to open at the end of 2021. The structure of the building is to be completed within the coming months and it has already reached its highest point. The construction works in the spaces below the ground level are also in an advanced state.

The building is designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto and built next to the lake in City Park. It will feature interactive exhibitions presenting Hungary’s rich musical heritage, will run music pedagogy workshops, and host indoor and outdoor music events. The environmentally friendly building aims to create a continuity of indoor and outdoor spaces, linking the natural and manmade environments.

Back in December, the House of Hungarian Music was recognized once again, as it became the world’s best public building – after previously taking the award for the best public building in Europe – at the International Property Awards.

László Baán, ministerial commissioner for the Liget project, said that the former Hungexpo office building will be replaced by a unique music complex. He stressed that Budapest will not just be enriched with a new concert venue, as it will be only one of the functions of the House of Hungarian Music. It will also serve as the home for permanent and temporary exhibitions, music events, and act as a music education center as well.

Below the space, there will be a permanent exhibition on the nature and history of music, as well as a temporary exhibition space, the first of which presents the history of Hungarian pop music. The first level will serve as a venue for a variety of indoor and outdoor music events, while the loft will house music education workshops, he said. According to Baán, the building’s glass façade, which is unique in Europe, as well as the special, wavy roof structure will soon be completed.

Benedek Gyorgyevics, CEO of Városliget Zrt., who is responsible for the implementation of the Liget Budapest project, added that at the underground level, they are almost finished with construction works.

András Batta, music historian and leader of the professional working group at the House of Hungarian Music, emphasized that the institution will present music as a community experience and will explore not only classical genres but all styles of music.
